Human physiology is the study of normal functions of various organ systems in the human body.  This subject is one of the three basic science subjects for the 1st year MBBS course.  The course duration is 1 year with two semesters. At the end of the  2nd semester,  students have to appear for University Examination in Theory,  Practical & Viva-voce.  A pass in the subject is mandatory for promotion to 3rd semester.

The department was established in 2002 with Dr. Alice George [former Professor of Physiology Govt. Medical College Thrissur & C.M.C. Vellore] as Head of the Department. Dr. K. Saraswathy & Dr. Annamma Mathew [former Professors of Govt. Medical Colleges in Kerala] also took charge as Professors in 2002.  Dr. Alice George retired in 2009 &   Dr. Annamma Mathew took charge as HOD.

The department is catering to the curricular requirements of MBBS,  BSc. Nursing & Post Basic Nursing.
The department conducts daily assessments,  monthly test papers,  seminars and tutorials in addition to the three Sessional Examinations.  The average mark secured by the students in these examinations is reckoned as the Internal Assessment marks of the University Examination.  The pass percentage in Physiology is above 90% since the inception of this college in 2002, with several distinctions and 1st classes.    

Besides the academic activities and responsibilities in the department,  faculty members have been involved in research activities too.  Presently,  there are 4 ongoing research projects and 7 research publications in national and international journals in the past 3 years.

The faculty members participate in various conferences & CME programs organized within the state.

The department envisages Post Graduate Courses in MSc. Medical Physiology & M.D. Physiology and in developing a well equipped research wing in the near future.


The didactic lecture classes are taken in a lecture hall with a seating capacity for 150 students with all the required audio-visual aids.  The department has well-equipped Haematology Lab,  Amphibian Lab & Mammalian Lab,  all of which have been catering to the curricular requirements of MBBS.  There is a Demonstration hall with a seating capacity for 60 students,  which is utilized for intra-departmental lectures,  tutorials and group discussions to MBBS student sub groups and for Nursing students.
There is a spacious well stocked Departmental Library with a total of 283 books in Physiology and related subjects.
A research room with essential instruments,  models & charts is also established as per MCI recommendations.
The department developed a unique video nodule in accordance with the MCI recommendations to impart training in experiments which were previously conducted on live animals.
